That’s the fourth one, right? I like that one a lot, did I say I didn’t?;;

Also, I meant to say I didn’t like the second one much, instead of the third. I like the song a lot (and get it stuck in my head) but the colors were jarring so I didn’t like watching it.

I saw a coyote on my walk today. There’s a pretty big nature park nearby, but I saw it on a paved walking path near an urban wetlands, just a few yards from a highway. That’s the first live coyote I’ve seen in Oregon. Certainly wasn’t expecting to see one here. :o

Well I’m on the fourth one, lol. I don’t think the third one even lasted ten episodes, which is upsetting because I really loved the animation on that one. I didn’t like the second opening/ending much, mostly because of the colors, but I love the ending song a lot… I’ll definitely need some of these for my iPod…

In this delicate print the ghost of the little maid Okiku appears from a well under a weeping willow. There are two versions of her story.

Aoyama Tessan was a hatamoto, bannerman, a leading retainer of the shogun Ietsugu (ruled 1709 - 16). He lived in the Bancho district of Edo. Dutch merchants had entrusted him with ten very valuable porcelain dishes, one of which his wife accidentally broke. Terrified of her husband’s reaction, she blamed the maid, Okiku, and thre the broken pieces down the family well. Okiku was locked up and half-starved, pleading her innocence in vain. After several days she escaped and in desperation drowned herself in the well. Each night her little ghost would appear, count slowly up to nine, then break into a fearful wail, preventing the household from sleeping. Eventually a friend of the family, Mitsakuni Shonin, exorcised her by the simple expedient of waiting till she had counted to nine, then saying ‘ten’ in a loud voice. Her spirit was satisfied and appeared no more.

In an alternative story, Okiku the maid rejected Aoyama’s amorous advances. Aoyama hid one of the plates that he had given her for safekeeping, then suddenly asked her to produce the full set. When she could not, he offered to overlook her carelessness if she would sleep with him. Still she refused. He killed her in fury and threw her body into the well. She haunted the well from that time on, continually counting the plates but never reaching ten. This second version forms the basis of the play Bancho Sarayashiki (The Dish Mansion of Bancho). A version of Okiku’s well is also displayed at Himeji Castle, known as White Heron Castle, about thirty miles west of Kobe.
